A gable roof has two sloping sides that meet at a central ridge, creating that classic triangular shape you see on most Australian homes. Think of it as a pitched roof that funnels hot air up and out whilst providing solid shelter.
A flat roof sits horizontal (though it actually has a slight pitch for drainage). It’s minimal, streamlined, and as straightforward as roofing gets.
Both work in Perth. The question is which works better for your situation.
How They Handle Perth’s Summer Heat
Perth summers are relentless. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, we average 31.7°C in February, but it’s not unusual to see the mercury hit 43°C. And those temperatures stick around from December through to early April.
Gable roofs create natural ventilation. Hot air rises and escapes through the peak, pulling cooler air in from the sides. The extra height also means more shade coverage and less direct heat radiating down onto your furniture.
If you’re planning to use your patio for summer barbecues or as an outdoor dining area, this airflow makes a genuine difference to comfort.
Flat roofs don’t have that natural ventilation advantage. Heat can build up underneath, especially if you’re using solid Colorbond sheeting. You can offset this with insulated panels or by incorporating skylights, but you’re working against physics rather than with it.
That said, flat roofs work fine if your patio is partially shaded by existing structures, or if you’re mainly using it in the mornings and evenings when temperatures drop.
