What are the sizes of the granny flats that I can build as ancillary accomodation?

Does the term ancillary accomodation mean a granny flat?

Yes, councils use the term “ancillary accommodation” to describe additional dwellings that can be built on a block of land.
Usually there is a family residence and now you add a granny flat up to 70sq, metres floor space.

Who can live in a granny flat?

Are all these buildings engineered?

All cabins, cottages, granny flats come with engineering drawings, ready for council. If you provide a site plan, our draftsperson can add this to and give you a comprehensive pack.

Can I install my own cabin, cottage or granny flat?

Absolutely. The Cottage Creations range come with interlocking timber beams and planks. There are significant advantages in precision, performance and speed of construction; especially for the DIY handyperson. see link to video

How long does it take to install a granny flat?

Most of our cabins can be installed in several days, or a week. This is the benefit of the modular design of our granny flats, cabins, studios. A large granny flat recently took us 20 days to install.
Most other manufacturers can take up to 12 weeks.

Can I design my granny flat to suit my block, as I have a corner block?

Because the cabins, studios and granny flats are made of timber should I be worried abut white ants?

We use a environmentally safe paint. The paint/stain is entirely non-toxic, with zero hazardous air pollutants. It complies with the Australian Ecolabel Program; which means low VOC emissions. Ultralast Timbersafe will absorb into the timber, it is used to prevent white ants, wood rot and it also acts as a fire retardant. See page on Timbersafe for more information.

What about fire?

Ultralast Timbersafe acts as a fire retardant. TimberSafe is the most effective environmental, non toxic timber preservative known today. The unique attributes of this product is its capacity to provide a holistic solution to timber problems. It is a deep penetrating colourless and odourless liquid absorbed into the timber as if its sap.

If I want to build my own cabin, cottage, studio or granny flat, do I need to speak to council?

Each council may have different requirements for rules and regulations for planning and building, we will speak to the council on your behalf to seek approval and planning permission.

How long does it take to get a cabin once it’s ordered?

We are ordering stock all the time. We get the flat packs into Perth, and deliver to site if you are building it yourself.
For a more customised design, or modified design, this will take a little longer, but once on-site the installation time is quick.

Do I need to install a cabin, cottage on a concrete slab?

GRANNY FLAT FAQs

No. Most people install the cabin on joists, which are concreted into the ground. This saves a lot of money, time and means the cabin, cottage in some ways can be taken down and re-installed elsewhere. BUT we recommend you consult us before doing this.
